The Vassar First Year
The Vassar First Year is a series of events, including New Student Orientation, meant to introduce new students to Vassar College. A mix of academic events, cultural happenings and discussions about campus issues, the programs are designed to get students talking about the big ideas they face in their scholarship and their social life on campus.
The First Year Mission
The Vassar First Year Program (VFYP) seeks to ensure that each new student will feel welcomed into the Vassar community and encouraged to explore opportunities that will fulfill Vassar’s ideal of a richly satisfying personal and intellectual engagement.
First year students are faced with many challenges as they adjust to new academic, social, and interpersonal expectations. The VFYP provides events and activities designed to support the unique needs of beginning and transfer students, introducing them to Vassar traditions and to Vassar’s standards of civility and the pursuit of excellence. The VFYP seeks to help new students respect and value individual difference and cultural diversity as they embrace the responsibilities, privileges and rights that come with membership in the Vassar community.
The VFYP is committed to providing an environment in which each student may grow in maturity, confidence, and ability, and meet with courage and pleasure the challenges of the first year of college and beyond.
